Communications Specialist

During my time at Smithcom, a reputation management agency, I gained experience in media relations, corporate public relations and investor relations, event planning, litigation support and media training through a range of client projects in the food, mining, non-profit and financial services industries.

Maple Leaf Foods Corporate Twitter
Maple Leaf Foods approached Smithcom with a request to launch a corporate Twitter account to engage with company stakeholders and the media. Previously, the company only had a branded account. Working closely with their communications department, I created and implemented a brand strategy to build followers, drafted four months of Tweets into an Excel spreadsheet, posted Tweets, monitored notifications and conducted a monthly analytics report. This social media presence became a vital aspect of Maple Leaf Foods' corporate strategy. Click here to view some of my drafted Tweets.

Ontario Mining Association Event Logistics
To promote Northwestern Ontario mining to Canadians, the Ontario Mining Association asked Smithcom to create a pop-up giveaway at the Canadian National Exhibition. I reached out to food truck vendors across the Greater Toronto Area to build a list of quotes and ordered a plain food truck that could be wrapped in the OMA’s branding. Throughout this promotional campaign, I was also responsible for the logistics involving a video campaign in Northwestern Ontario, building a list of quotes, and booking air travel, hotels and other expenses for the producer and videographer involved in the project.

Knowledge First Financial Press Coverage
I created a media outreach list and pitched original news stories for Knowledge First Financial's annual Graduate Scholarship to trade and community publications across Canada. After communicating with journalists, there was coverage of the scholarship in the Cambridge Times, Mississauga.com, The Insurance and Investment Journal and The Stettler Independent.

Chicken Farmers of Canada Vendor Outreach
Looking to build awareness around sustainability measures and certified practices of Canadian chicken farming, Chicken Farmers of Canada asked Smithcom to lead the creation of a partnership with different food delivery services across Canada. This involved researching every Canadian food delivery service, reaching out to see if each company's chickens were raised in Canada and contacting them to discuss partnership opportunities. While the project is still ongoing, a number of food delivery services have expressed interest in adding CFC's branding to their physical products and online presence.

NEO Exchange Social Media
I managed NEO Exchange's Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. Daily tasks included drafting content, uploading Tweets to Meltwater Engage and monitoring notifications. Click here to view some of my drafted posts.

Media Monitoring
I conducted daily and weekly media and social media monitoring reports for several of our clients. I also established a number of media monitoring reports and helped refine existing reports.
